SWOSU Press Release

Two biology students from the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), Colter Esparza from Granite and Darren Powers from Burns Flat, have recently been awarded funding by the TriBeta National Biological Honor Society to advance their ongoing research in pancreatic cancer.

The TriBeta National Biological Honor Society, dedicated to furthering the exploration of biological studies and knowledge through scientific research, has recognized the outstanding work of these undergraduates committed to the field.

Under the guidance of their faculty mentor, Dr. Pragya Sharma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at SWOSU, Esparza and Powers worked in Sharma’s lab and developed research proposals based on their respective projects. Both Esparza and Powers have been supported by OK-LSAMP and OK-INBRE in the past.

Esparza’s proposal, “Investigating the role of glutamine metabolism in the survival of Pancreatic cancer cells under metabolic stress conditions,” and Powers’ proposal, “Exploring the role of AMPK signaling and autophagy in metabolic adaptations of cancer cells,” outline their research questions, objectives, and methods.

The awarded funds will allow the students to travel to scientific conferences, providing them with valuable opportunities to share their findings. The students can also use these funds to purchase supplies and support stipends. As part of their commitment, both Esparza and Powers will present their research at either regional or national TriBeta research conventions.
