The trickle down effect of Oklahoma’s recent settlement agreements with major pharmacy chains regarding the over prescription of opioids has reached Elk City.

During their recent meeting, City Manager Tom Ivester says that the City Commission has approved to participate in settlement agreements with Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, Allergan, and Teva.

The settlements are the latest in a wave of deals that state and local governments have struck with companies. The total of proposed and finalized settlements is now more than $50 billion.

Ivester says its unclear as to how much the City of Elk City will get.

In 2019, Oklahoma, under then-Attorney General Mike Hunter, was the first state to reach a settlement with Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, for $270 million. Most of that money was used to establish a National Center for Addiction Studies and Treatment at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa.
