The Arapaho-Butler School District is celebrating today the overwhelming passage of their bond measure on Tuesday.
School District Superintendent Jay Edelen says he’s most excited about the outpouring of support for his students.
Two measures were on Tuesday’s ballot. One was a $4.76 million dollar bond that will add more classroom and cafeteria space as well as add more handicapped accessibility and improve transportation safety. It was approved by 67-percent of the vote with 196 votes “for” the issue against 92 people that voted no.
The second measure called, “Proposition 2” was a $210-thousand dollar transportation equipment bond to purchase two 72-passenger school buses and an SUV for student transportation. It was approved by 69-percent of the vote with 200 votes “for” compared to 91 people that voted no.
Edelen says he’s already begun work on the new construction.
Edelen says one of the major components of the construction improvement is the addition of four new classrooms and a set of restrooms that will be connected to the west end of the cafeteria. They’ll house pre-K and Kindergarten students.
The superintendent worked hard in getting the message out to voters by having a couple community meetings in March that provided information to the voters and answered questions regarding the bond issues.
He says last night’s victory celebration even carried over into this morning.
Edelen says Arapaho-Butler school district enrollment has been steadily increasing since the 2008-09 school year. Average daily enrollment in ’08 was about 325 students on a daily basis and now it’s hovering about 434 students.
The last bond measure also passed. It was for a gymnasium that was approved by voters in 2010.
