Highway 34 Rivals Compete for Softball State Titles
A pair of rivals from Highway 34 will compete for state titles in softball this evening. The Leedey Lady Bison earned a spot in the Class B slow pitch championship game after winning their quarterfinal and semifinal games this afternoon. They defeated MVG 8-1 in the quarterfinals and then won a high-scoring semifinal game 18-17 over Caney. The Lady Bison will face off against Whitesboro in the championship game. Whitesboro advanced to the finals after defeating Arnett in the semifinals, following a narrow victory against L-S 8-7 in the first round.
Meanwhile, the Hammon Lady Warriors secured a spot in the Class A championship game after winning their quarterfinal and semifinal games. They defeated Bennington 9-7 in the quarters and then held on to a one-run win over Stuart in the semis. Hammon will face off against the top-ranked team, Red Oak, in the finals.
Elk City Elks Win Regional Golf Championship
In other sports news, the Elk City Elks golf team won the regional tournament held in Kingfisher. The Big Elks claimed the regional championship with a total score of 606 over two rounds, finishing nine shots ahead of second place Crossings Christian. Woodward placed third and also qualified for next week’s state tournament. Senior Mason Schmidt was the medalist, shooting rounds of 64-76. Senior Nathan Womack finished second with rounds of 74-68. The Class 4A Boys State Golf Tournament will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Prairie West Golf Course in Weatherford. Unfortunately, the Weatherford Eagles were unable to qualify as a team or have any individuals make it to the state tournament, despite their home course advantage. The Eagles had a total score of 670. Clinton’s team shot 690 but two Red Tornadoes, Sutton Hernandez and Jaron Williams, will play as individuals. Hernandez made an impressive comeback, shooting a four-under 67 in the second round after an 89 in the first round, qualifying with a two-round total of 156.
State Soccer Playoffs Underway for Class 4A Girls and Boys
Finally, the state soccer playoffs for Class 4A girls and boys kicked off last night. The Elk City Elkettes’ season ended with a 5-0 loss to the Lady Bronchos in Bethany. The team finished with a record of 8-6. Clinton defeated Chickasha 2-1 in girls action, while Weatherford blanked Ada 1-0 and Woodward beat Cache 6-2. On the boys side, two-time defending champion Clinton defeated Madill 6-3, while Chickasha upset Weatherford 2-1.
