Wildfire season is upon us here in western Oklahoma and one local official says now is the time to prepare to help prevent any major wildfires from breaking out.

Elk City Fire Department Assistant Chief and Point of Information Officer Brian Pierce says with the change in the seasons from summer to early autumn, the department has seen a slight uptick in grass fire related calls, but nothing of significance. He offers advice on how to prevent grass fires from becoming a major event.

Pierce also noted that currently there are a larger than usual number of buildings that are unoccupied not only in Elk City but also in the surrounding area that have overgrown lawns or fields around them that could present a problem in the future.
