A dispute over a trailer has landed a Weatherford man a felony charge.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Custer County Sheriff’s Department, the dispute began when 20-year-old Rollie Calvin Smith IV approached an acquaintance about borrowing a 16-18 foot dual axle flat bed cotton hauler. The woman would tell the defendant that he needed to ask her husband, but he would allegedly take the trailer anyways.

A short time later, the husband would confront Smith about taking the trailer while in a pasture. The court document stated that a physical altercation would occur before Smith would allegedly drive off with the trailer.

Later that night while pulled over during a traffic stop in Weatherford, Smith would tell Weatherford Police that the trailer was at a home in the 2200 block of Apple Street. There authorities would find the stolen equipment and had it impounded without incident.

Smith was eventually arrested and received one felony larceny charge.

A preliminary hearing for Smith has been scheduled for March 10.
