Elk City is pumped over the new Ackley Park West attraction for wheeled-sports enthusiasts.

A pump track for bicycles, scooters, and skateboards was recently added immediately north of the skate park.

City Manager Tom Ivester investigated the pump track in Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District before deciding to install one here.

“Former mayor Nick Archer and I looked into that one and knew that Elk City would benefit from having a similar one,” Ivester said.

It’s called a “pump track” because the frequent track mini hills, called “rollers,” and corners, called “berms,” cause a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard to constantly rise and fall, creating a pumping motion that allows momentum to carry the rider.

Elk City had to wait 15 months for a specialty crew from northern California to install the asphalt track, which opened just in time for spring’s warmer weather.
