During an appearance on The Early Morning Show on KECO, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt talked about various hot button issues in the state, including teacher pay.

During his state-of-the-state address earlier this month, Gov. Stitt proposed his idea of matching funds so that high performing teachers could potentially make six-figure salaries and stay in the classroom, other than taking promotions that would take them away from the students.

Stitt said this isn’t an unheard of idea with other states practicing this plan, like neighboring Texas.

When asked where the money would come from to contribute to the pay, Stitt says his plan has multiple options.

Currently, according to business.org, Oklahoma ranks 21st in teacher earnings compared to the average salary in that state – with the teacher average annual income of $54,038.
