First Day of Election Filings Sees Local Candidates Declare

Statewide election activity officially began Wednesday with the filing period opening to the public.

As of Wednesday afternoon in Beckham County Kayla York Harris has filed to run for the county assessor seat. Jennifer Drury has filed for the county treasurer position. Carl Don Campbell has filed for the county commissioner seat in District 1. Michelle Kirby Roper has filed to retain her seat as associate district judge.

In Custer County, Janet Roulet has filed for treasurer and Brad Rennels for assessor. Wade Anders and David Fawver have filed for District 1 commissioner. Lyle Miller has filed for District 3 commissioner.

Roger Mills County has Brian Hay filing for the county commissioner District 1 seat. For county treasurer, Cassie Springer Drake, and filing for county assessor was Sarah Batterton. Pat VerSteeg filed for associate district judge.

In Washita County Bart Gossen filed for county commissioner district 1, while Floyd King filed for county commissioner district 3. Krystle D. Uecke filed for county assessor. S. Brooke Gatlin has filed for associate district judge in that county.

Elsewhere, Angela Marsee has declared her intention to retain her position as district attorney in district 2, which serves western Oklahoma. Jill Weedon has filed to stay on as district judge in district 2, office 1. Elk City Mayor Nick Archer made it official and has filed to run for state representative in district 55. A race has formed in that district, whereas Jeff Sawatzky of Clinton has also filed.

That position, currently held by Todd Russ of Cordell is about to be vacated due to term limits. However, Russ intends to continue his political career as he has filed for the state treasurer position. Clark Jolley of Edmond has also filed for that position.

Filing closes on Friday. Potential candidates will be allowed to file between 8a.m. and 5p.m.

Officials said candidates for state offices must file with the Secretary of the State Election Board while candidates for county offices must file with the Secretary of the County Election Board.
