An Elk City man was arrested last week after breaking windows out of a home and allegedly attempting to abduct two children.

According to court records, 30-year-old Jacob Wayne Merwin was arrested on Wednesday, September 21 and was formally charged with two counts of kidnapping of a child and one count of malicious injury to property over $1,000 on Monday in Beckham County District Court.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a Beckham County Sheriff’s Deputy was dispatched to a home located west of Elk City to a report of man breaking windows. When the deputy arrived, the subject could not be found however the homeowner was able to give a description of the vehicle he was driving in.

It was indicated in the affidavit the homeowner and the man did know each other.

In a voluntary statement from the homeowner, it stated that the man, later identified as being Merwin, arrived unannounced and started playing with the juveniles outside. When the homeowner went to check on the kids, he discovered the kids inside the trunk of his car, which he said was usually full of items. Once the children had exited, the man would notice a hatchet inside the trunk. He stated that he grabbed the hatched and asked Merwin what it was for, and that’s when the defendant became upset and ultimately began smashing the windows before leaving the scene.

Later that day Merwin was located in Elk City and arrested.

A court date for Merwin is pending.
