An Elk City man was charged last week in Beckham County District Court after allegedly kicking in the front door of his neighbor’s apartment.

According to the probable cause affidavit for arrest, 31-year-old Dereck Wayne Cheshire is accused of kicking in the door at an apartment complex in the 200 block of Brian Road in Elk City on the morning of May 10.

The affidavit stated that police were dispatched to the scene after the occupants of the unit on the second story say they were woken up to the sounds of someone kicking their front door. By the time the male occupant reached the front door, it had been kicked open by the suspect. After seeing the occupant, Cheshire would flee the scene. The occupants of the apartment told police that this wasn’t the first time Cheshire had attempted to kick in their door – saying he had attempted to commit the crime the previous night.

While inspecting the door, police noted that the door frame was damaged, and the deadbolt on the door was still in the locked position.

A short time later, police would locate and arrest Cheshire at West 7th and South Lusk Avenue.

Cheshire was charged last week with one felony count of burglary in the first degree. Bond was set at $10,000.

His first court date is scheduled for June 14.
