A Clinton man will serve jail time in a Nebraska prison after being found guilty of of stealing a sheriff’s car.

According to an article out of the Fairbury Journal-News, 39-year-old Bird Roy Nightwalker was found guilty of stealing a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit on the evening of December 17, 2021.

According to the article, surveillance footage showed Nightwalker attempting to gain access to parked cars at the Sheriff’s Office. After failed attempts, he would eventually gain access to the patrol unit and drive away.

It was reported that some time later the Grundy County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office would locate the car abandoned near Trenton, Missouri.

Jefferson County officials said it was believed that Nighwalker had driven the car to the location to meet up with an acquaintance and would run out of gas.

The defendant would later turn himself in to Grundy County Sheriff officials.

Authorities would later say the patrol unit had minor damage, but was still operational.

Nightwalker was charged with theft by unlawful taking, with a value greater than $5,000, which resulted in a Class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Nightwalker pleaded no contest, and during his trial his lawyer said he “blacked out” and did not remember much of the incident.

He was given credit for 221 days served and is scheduled for 18 months of post-release supervision.
