Provided Press Release

On Wednesday, April 12, Merritt and Sweetwater Schools were happy to welcome Sgt. Yokley, with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department/Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and Trooper Skaggs with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. They did some hands on training with the high school students about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Sgt. Yokley and Trooper Skaggs spoke about the importance of having a plan in place and someone to call when going to any event where the opportunity to drink is a possibility. They did several exercises with Fatal Vision Impairment Goggles to demonstrate to the students how dangerous being under the influence can be.

A driving course was also set up with orange cones. The students then put the goggles on to try and navigate an ATV around the cones without knocking any over. Despite the valiant effort put forth by the students, the Highway Safety Office will need to replenish their stock of orange cones! It was a fun but educational experience that reinforced how easily a situation can turn from fun to deadly in an instant. A big thanks from the Beckham County Sheriff’s Department, have a safe and happy Prom/Graduation season!

This event will be coming to Sayre School on May 3.
