Clinton, OK — Two women were arrested following a late-night disturbance that led to gunfire on Hunt Avenue in Clinton on September 26, according to court records and police affidavits filed in Custer County District Court.
Police say 24-year-old Nicole Shania Turtle and 43-year-old Debby Lee Whitecrow were taken into custody after officers responded to reports of shots fired near North 18th Street and Hunt Avenue around 9:19 p.m.
When officers arrived, witnesses told police their neighbor, Turtle, had fired a rifle toward them from outside her home at 1805 Hunt Avenue. They also reported seeing a fight between Whitecrow and another neighbor in the same area.
Cell phone video recorded by one of the witnesses reportedly captured Turtle yelling while pointing what appeared to be a small-caliber bolt-action rifle at the ongoing fight. Moments later, a gunshot is heard.
Officers said another gunshot was heard as they investigated. Witnesses alleged Turtle fired again from the east side of Whitecrow’s residence at 1806 Hunt Avenue and that Whitecrow pulled her and the gun back inside. Police later found a bullet hole and metal fragment on a nearby house gutter.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers entered Whitecrow’s home and found both women asleep in a bedroom. A .22 caliber bolt-action rifle was recovered from the closet, and a .22 bullet was found in Turtle’s pocket, according to police reports.
Turtle was charged with four counts, including feloniously pointing a firearm, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm in a public place, and threatening to perform an act of violence. Her bond was set at $100,000 with a condition of no contact with the victims.
Whitecrow was charged with harboring a fugitive from justice and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. She was booked into the Clinton City Jail on a $75,000 bond. Court records show Whitecrow was previously convicted of a drug-related felony in Pottawatomie County in 2013.
Both women were formally charged September 29 in Custer County District Court.
