The cause of a single vehicle accident west of Elk City Friday morning is under investigation.

According to the accident report provided by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol the accident occurred on Business I-40, 2 miles west of Elk City at 8:21 a.m. when, for an unknown reason, a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by 46-year-old Todd D. Gillespie of Elk City departed the road to the right and impacted an unoccupied 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

As a result, the collision caused the Mustang to roll approximately 1 and a half times, coming to rest on its top.

Troopers said Gillespie was ejected approximately 50 feet during the rollover.

Gillespie was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he was admitted in critical condition with head, leg, arm, and trunk internal injuries.
