Beckham County, OK – A Sunday morning pursuit on Interstate 40 ended without injuries after law enforcement stopped a speeding vehicle driven by two juveniles, according to Beckham County Sheriff Derek Manning.
Manning said the call came in around 9:30 a.m. as motorists reported a car traveling about 100 miles per hour and running off the roadway somewhere between Sayre and Elk City. An Elk City Police officer located the vehicle near Hutches West and followed it until a Beckham County deputy took over.
“The pursuit, fortunately, didn’t last very long,” Manning said. Deputies brought the vehicle to a stop near the 31 or 32 mile marker on I-40.
The car had not been reported stolen but was considered an unauthorized use situation involving someone known to the juveniles. Both occupants were taken into custody at the scene.
According to Manning, the passenger was released to family members in Elk City. The driver was taken to the hospital for testing to determine whether intoxicants were involved, then transported to a juvenile detention facility in Cleveland County. Manning noted that Beckham County does not house juvenile offenders locally.
When asked about possible substance use, Manning said investigators are still working to determine whether it played a role. “There was a suspicion of that, so we’re looking into that,” he said.
