An early Sunday morning crash in Custer County has hospitalized a pair of local teens.

According to an accident report filed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the mishap occurred on at 1:15 Sunday morning, two miles west of Clinton, when the 2007 GMC pick-up driven by 19-year-old Christopher Newcomb of Clinton traveled off the right side of the road after being distracted by a phone. The driver over corrected and then traveled across both eastbound lanes and the center median. The pick-up would strike the cable barrier, which caused the vehicle to become airborne for approximately 20 feet before crossing over the westbound lanes, and began to roll. OHP say the pick-up rolled 3 ¼ times causing the passenger, 19-year-old Elk City resident Mikah Butler, to be ejected 40 feet from the truck.

Both Newcomb and Butler were transported to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City and admitted with head injuries. They were last listed to be in stable condition.

The OHP report stated that the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, however the passenger was not.

Responding to the crash along with the OHP included the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton Police Department, Clinton Fire Department and Sinor EMS.
