Eakly, OK — State officials are investigating a possible case of water contamination along Five Mile Creek near Eakly after dozens of cattle died in recent days.
The losses began earlier this month when ranchers in the area noticed abnormal water conditions in the creek, including bubbling and seepage near a pit site. Cattle that had access to the creek began dying despite being moved to fresh water sources.
At least 23 cows and two calves have been reported dead so far, with more losses occurring daily.
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission and the Department of Environmental Quality are testing the water to determine the source of the contamination. Officials are also monitoring nearby water supplies to assess whether drinking water could be at risk.
Neighbors have been warned to move livestock away from the creek as investigations continue. Authorities say identifying and stopping the source of the contamination is the top priority.
