Western Oklahoma – Of all the oil and gas plays across the U.S., the Granite Wash saw the most dramatic gain in drilling activity, according to the latest Baker Hughes rig count. Located in Beckham, Roger Mills, and Washita counties in Oklahoma and Hemphill and Wheeler counties in Texas, the Granite Wash held steady at 16 active rigs. That’s a 300% increase from a year ago, when just 4 rigs were operating in the area. It was also one of only four plays nationwide that didn’t record a decline over the past week.
Another Oklahoma play, the Mississippian in northern Oklahoma and western Kansas, also saw no week-over-week change—but has had no active drilling for several months.
Meanwhile, the Cana Woodford play dropped by one rig, bringing its total to 20. The Ardmore Woodford also fell by one, down to 4 rigs, and the Arkoma Woodford slipped to just 1 active rig after losing one this week.
