Elk City, OK – The Elk City Chamber of Commerce has been awarded more than $200,000 through the Route 66 Revitalization Grant Program, aimed at preserving and enhancing one of Elk City’s most recognizable landmarks—Parker Drilling Rig 114.
The funding, part of a broader initiative across Oklahoma communities along the historic Route 66 corridor, will support a comprehensive site improvement plan. The project will include:

New lighting and uplighting

Landscaping enhancements

Painting and equipment restoration

Digital signage with historical and educational content

Benches and trash receptacles to improve the visitor experience
This investment ensures that Parker Drilling Rig 114—an enduring symbol of Elk City’s oil history and frontier spirit—continues to serve as a proud destination for future generations.
The grant is part of a statewide push to breathe new life into iconic Route 66 locations.
In a press release, Chamber leaders expressed their gratitude for the grant and also thanked SWODA Grant Writer Lisa Church for helping facilitate the grant application.
The Chamber also extended its thanks to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and all stakeholders involved in securing the grant, and they plan to keep the public updated on progress as improvements move forward.
Last week, the Town of Canute was also recently awarded nearly $700,000 in revitalization funding to support upgrades along its stretch of Route 66.
