
Weatherford, OK — The Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) and Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) today announced the appointment of Dr. Joel Kendall as Interim President of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, effective January 12, 2026.
Dr. Kendall brings extensive experience in higher education administration and a deep understanding of SWOSU’s mission, culture, and community. His appointment ensures strong leadership and sustained momentum as the university continues its work to support students, faculty, and staff while advancing academic excellence and institutional growth.
Dr. Kendall currently serves as Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and previously served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Provost, professor and department chair at SWOSU. He received a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University, master’s degree from Indiana University, and doctoral degree in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma.
Jane McDermott, Chair of the RUSO Board of Regents, praised Dr. Kendall’s leadership and service.
“Dr. Kendall is a respected and steady leader with a strong commitment to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and its students,” McDermott said. “We are confident in his ability to guide the university forward while maintaining focus on student success, institutional priorities and service to the community.”
Sean Burrage, Chancellor for the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, commended the appointment of Dr. Kendall.
“Dr. Joel Kendall is an excellent choice to advance the mission of Southwestern Oklahoma State University as interim president,” Chancellor Burrage said. “In his time on the State Regents staff, Joel has continually demonstrated the acumen, vision, and leadership required to advance workforce development and student success initiatives. While we will miss his many contributions as part of our team, we look forward to working with him in his new role as an innovator and champion for SWOSU, the RUSO board, and western Oklahoma.”
Dr. Kendall expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the university.
“It is a tremendous honor to return to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and serve an institution with such a rich legacy and a promising future,” Kendall said. “It will be a privilege to work alongside a team of dedicated SWOSU professionals who are committed to helping students achieve personal and academic goals, while also meeting the region’s workforce needs.”
The Regional University System of Oklahoma expresses gratitude to Dr. Janet Cunningham, who has served as Acting President of SWOSU since September.
