Burns Flat officials are confirming that Washita County is now reporting its first case of COVID-19.

According to the Town of Burns Flat’s Facebook page, the case is not in the city limits of Burns Flat, but is being described as “close” to the community. The case was confirmed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health a short time later.

Jackson County has an additional active case as well. That brings the number of active cases in that county to 3. Greer County remains with 4 active cases, Kiowa County has 3, and Beckham County has 1.

Harmon, and Roger Mills Counties are still without a confirmed positive case.

Oklahoma has seen a decrease of active cases statewide. Currently there are 1,018 Oklahoma residents with the virus, down 3 when compared to Wednesday. However there have been 3 additional deaths due to the virus in the past 24 hours. The state’s death count is at 284.

Currently there are 211 Oklahomans hospitalized due to COVID-19. That is down only 1 when compared to Wednesday.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

Gov. Kevin Stitt held a news conference Thursday to give an update on the state’s coronavirus situation as more businesses prepare to reopen Friday during phase two of Oklahoma’s reopening plans.

Stitt said the state’s decisions to reopen will be based on the data here. He said Oklahoma continues to hold steady with the eighth fewest cases per capita in the country.

During phase two, bars can reopen, organized sports can resume as well as weddings and funerals with more than 10 people.
