Elk City, OK – A Cheyenne man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing a mini-bike from Tractor Supply in Elk City and leading law enforcement on a chase through Beckham County.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Beckham County District Court, 30-year-old Joshua Carl Stanfield was arrested on August 29 after deputies said he stole a Coleman B200rs Mini-bike from a farm and garden store on West 3rd Street. Witnesses told police they saw Stanfield pushing the bike away from the store before riding off westbound.
Deputies with the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office and Elk City Police quickly spotted Stanfield riding the stolen mini-bike at speeds of up to 30 mph. Officers say he swerved into oncoming lanes, disregarded traffic, and ignored commands to stop. At one point, law enforcement established a roadblock, but Stanfield reportedly maneuvered around it and continued fleeing.
The pursuit ended near the intersection of County Roads 1100 and 1040 when Stanfield lost control and crashed into a grassy area. Deputies say he continued on foot, jumping a metal fence and attempting to escape through a private pasture before being taken into custody.
Investigators later found an empty gasoline can and other stolen property behind an abandoned building where Stanfield was seen before the chase. Store employees confirmed the mini-bike had not been fueled prior to the theft, leading officers to believe Stanfield staged the items to aid his getaway.
Stanfield is charged with larceny of an automobile or motor vehicle, eluding a police officer, and willfully avoiding roadblocks set by peace officers. He was booked into the Beckham County Jail.
Bond was set at $10,000. His next court date is scheduled for October 27.
