Roger Mills County, OK – A wildfire burning near Kiowa Road in Roger Mills County scorched more than 300 acres of pasture land Tuesday afternoon before crews were able to bring it largely under control.
According to Kyle Chervenka, the fire started along 990 Road, roughly two miles west of Highway 34. Fire crews initially found four separate fires that eventually merged into one larger blaze.
The fire spread across county lines, prompting a multi county response. Roger Mills County crews led the initial attack, with assistance from task forces from Custer County and Beckham County.
After burning together, the fire ultimately split into two main sections. The eastern portion burned approximately 200 acres and is estimated to be 70 to 80 percent contained. The western fire burned about 130 acres and is in similar condition. Crews remained on scene Wednesday to mop up hot spots, clear burned trees, and reinforce containment lines ahead of shifting winds.
No homes or other structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.
Chervenka said the Beckham County Task Force was already responding to another wildfire earlier in the day in Greer County when the Kiowa Road fire broke out. That fire, located about nine miles west of Willow in rough terrain, burned an estimated 130 acres and was believed to have been caused by grinding activity in a shop.
“This is just that time of year,” Chervenka said. “The fuels are extremely dry, and even without strong winds, these grass fires can move fast and become very difficult to stop.”
He credited local heavy equipment operators for their role in containing both fires.
“Without those guys cutting line and creating access for us, it would almost be impossible to get some of these fires stopped,” he said.
Fire officials urge residents to remain cautious, as dry conditions and a lack of rainfall continue to create elevated wildfire risk across the region.
