Elk City, OK – The City of Elk City has purchased a long-abandoned property at 102 BJ Hughes Access Road, taking a major step toward cleanup and redevelopment.
According to information released by the City of Elk City, commissioners approved the $30,178.45 purchase from the Beckham County Treasurer during their September 17 meeting. The site had been declared dilapidated in 2022 due to unsafe conditions.
The previous owner, Patch of Land Lending LLC, a California company, obtained the property through a foreclosure lawsuit in May 2021. The company had originally held a mortgage lien of $1,084,110. However, property taxes had not been paid since 2019, and Patch of Land Lending allowed the property to revert to the county rather than cover the unpaid taxes.
City officials said the purchase allows Elk City to move forward with demolition. The City plans to bid out the project to remove the structure. Mayor Nick Archer Kilhoffer identified the cleanup as a major priority.
“This is a major step toward eliminating a long-standing eyesore and opening the door for future redevelopment opportunities that benefit our community,” the City’s statement read.
Once cleared, the property will be put up for sale with the goal of covering cleanup costs, not turning a profit.
