From the Oklahoma Panhandle to Broken Bow, AAA says a busy Fourth of July travel period is on the way. Nearly 643,000 Oklahomans are expected to travel over the holiday, joining 72.2 million Americans on the move.
“Expect packed highways and busy airports,” said Shawn Steward, public affairs manager for AAA Oklahoma. “Most people will travel by car, so remember to drive sober, follow traffic laws, buckle up, and be courteous.”
AAA also reminds drivers to minimize distractions. Phones should be on “do not disturb.” Set your GPS, climate, and music before leaving. Skip the drive-thru and take breaks to eat inside and rest.
Construction Projects to Watch For
Several road construction zones across western Oklahoma could impact travel:

I-40 east and westbound is reduced to one lane in each direction at SH-30 in Erick for bridge rehabilitation.

SH-34 is narrowed to one lane with temporary signals north of Hammon for bridge repairs.

US-60 is narrowed both directions between Seiling and Vici for bridge reconstruction.

US-270 is down to one lane each way through Oakwood for pavement work.
Drivers should plan extra time and expect delays in these areas.
Be Road-Ready
Last summer, AAA roadside crews responded to nearly 59,000 calls in Oklahoma. Common problems included dead batteries and bad tires. Travelers should check their vehicle’s maintenance, battery, and tire pressure before hitting the road.

Best and Worst Drive Times
