Beckham County, OK – Beckham County deputies recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a suspect Friday (June 20) after a sharp-eyed deputy and some solid police work helped crack the case.
According to Sheriff Derek Manning, the situation began when a deputy stopped to check on what appeared to be an abandoned vehicle along the interstate early Friday morning. Sheriff Manning, who happened to be in the area, joined the deputy at the scene.
“There were a couple of things that looked a little bit suspicious to us,” said Manning. “But we checked it, it didn’t come back stolen, and we couldn’t reach the registered owner. So we left it there with the intent of checking on it later.”
Later that afternoon, the vehicle triggered what law enforcement calls a “delayed hit” in the NCIC (National Crime Information Center) database. When an item is entered into NCIC as stolen, wanted, or missing, it can retroactively alert officers who previously ran checks.
Deputies returned to the scene and began canvassing nearby businesses. Video footage from one location showed a person exiting the vehicle and heading in a certain direction. Following the trail through multiple businesses, deputies ultimately found the suspect still at one of the locations.
The man was arrested on the spot for possession of a stolen vehicle. Investigators were able to identify the registered owner, who turned out to be an acquaintance of the suspect. The vehicle was safely recovered and returned.
Sheriff Manning praised the effort, saying, “That was very good police work by the deputies that followed up and went the extra mile, rather than just writing it off as an abandoned vehicle.”
