Shattuck, OK — A collision that occurred earlier this month on U.S. Highway 60 has resulted in a fatality, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at 7:14 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, roughly 9 miles south of Shattuck in Ellis County, 200 yards west of the US-283 junction.
A 2015 International truck driven by 32-year-old Brice D. Reihm of Perryton, Texas, was eastbound on US-60 when Reihm reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The truck veered off the right side of the highway. Reihm overcorrected, lost control, and the vehicle rolled onto its side.
Passenger Jose T. L’Esperance, 52, also of Perryton, was trapped in the wreckage for about 30 minutes before being freed by the Shattuck Fire Department. He was first taken by Ellis County EMS to Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck and later transferred to Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo, where he was admitted in critical condition.
L’Esperance died on June 14 from injuries sustained in the crash. Medical staff confirmed the delayed fatality following complications related to head and internal injuries.
Reihm was treated and released from Newman Memorial with a minor arm injury.
The cause of the crash was listed as driver fatigue.
