Clinton, OK – A Clinton man was arrested and charged recently after allegedly taking another man’s pickup from a bank parking lot.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the truck’s owner witnessed the theft in progress and jumped onto the moving vehicle as it sped away.
The alleged driver was identified as 47-year-old Joshua Ellis Cabaniss of Clinton, who now faces charges of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and Reckless Driving in Custer County District Court. Charges were filed on May 14. He also faces a charge of Larceny of an Automobile.
Officers were dispatched around 9:46 a.m. on May 12 to a bank on Wheatland Plaza following a report of a stolen vehicle. The truck exited the lot, turned north on S. 28th Street, then east on Custer Avenue, and north again on N. 15th Street—reportedly running all stop signs along the way.
The chase ended in the 1100 block of Dougherty Avenue, where the vehicle came to a stop. Cabaniss allegedly exited and attempted to enter a nearby residence. He was later found sitting on a back porch and was detained.
The truck’s owner identified Cabaniss at the scene and showed officers a photo of him approaching the house. Surveillance video also reportedly confirmed the events.
Cabaniss was booked into the City Jail. His bond was set at $20,000. His next court date is May 28.
