A large grass fire on the north side of Elk City Monday afternoon was contained by crews before any structures became involved.

Elk City Fire Chief Kyle Chervenka says the call of multiple grass fires in a ditch that ran parallel to N. Van Buren came in just after 4 p.m. He said when crews arrived they were able to quickly knock down one fire before moving on to the others that threatened buildings.

Chervenka said crews along with personal from the Canute Fire Department fought the blaze that actually entered into the Elk City Municipal Airport.

He said upon further investigation, it appears the fire was accidental in nature. He said officials found broken off pieces of metal that he suspects came off of a damaged vehicle driving along N. Van Buren.
