Last Friday night was the penultimate week of the high school football regular season for most of the schools in Western Oklahoma. Some district races gained some clarity after Week 9, while others are still up in the air. Elk City helped to put the 4A-1 puzzle pieces together with a 43-14 win over Woodward on Sr. Night inside Big Elk Stadium. The Elks jumped out to a 21-0 with plays like this one early in the first quarter…. Woodward would force a pair of Big Elks turnovers in the last 4 minutes of the first half to trim the lead down to 21-14 at the break. The second half saw the Elks put the Boomers away by outscoring them 22-0. Jayden Wynn paced the Elks ground attack with 126 yards on 19 carries and 2 TDs. Tucker Garza chipped in with 92 yards on 9 carries and a score. Elk City improves to 6-3 overall, 4-1 in the district with the final regular season game coming this Friday against John Marshall.

In other 4A-1 action, Clinton went to Cache and got shutout by the Bulldogs 7-0. Wford handled John Marshall 42-16. With a week to go the 4A-1 standings look like this. Clinton and Elk City are tied at 4-1. Clinton’s the district champ with a win over Woodward this week due to holding the head-to-head tiebreak. Wford’s finished at 4-2 and will be 3rd. Cache is currently 4th and Chickasha 5th, but those two play this week. The winner makes the playoffs the loser is out. John Marshall is 6th at 1-4. Woodward’s in the cellar at 0-5.

The Merritt Oilers were unable to pull the upset off on Sr. Night against Hooker. The Bulldogs came down from the panhandle and smacked Merritt 49-13 ending any hopes of a playoff berth for Merritt in Class A District 1.

A surprise result in A-1 has ushered in some clarity with the playoff teams. Mooreland upset Thomas 22-12. That result solidified the 4 playoff spots in the district. Fairview’s the district champ at 6-0. Hooker’s alone for now in 2nd at 5-1. Mooreland and Thomas are tied for 3rd at 4-2. Those 4 will be in the Class A playoffs but the order will be decided after this week’s games.

In Class B District 1 the teams are known but the order isn’t. Hollis went to Shattuck and were beaten 44-14. Laverne beat Turpin 46-26. Laverne is the district champion. Turpin’s currently second with Shattuck 3rd and Hollis 4th. Hollis has a chance to change the order on Friday night with a road trip to Turpin.
