A Georgia man accused of kidnapping, abusing, and even stabbing his girlfriend during a cross country trip was arrested earlier this month in Custer County.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Weatherford Police, 21-year-old Luis Angel Fernandez was arrested on the afternoon of September 10 after leading police on a high speed pursuit that saw speeds reach up to 146mph in the westbound lanes of I-40. Eventually a trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was able to perform a TVI maneuver on the vehicle and apprehend Fernandez south and east of Clinton, just off of Exit 71.

While speaking with the girlfriend, she would tell authorities that she was forced to take the trip from Rome, Georgia to Los Angeles, California with the man because she was the only one with a valid driver’s license. She would say that Fernandez had allegedly been abusing her throughout the course of their relationship. She said the latest incident occurred when he broke a plastic cup and used sharp edges of the cup to cut and even stab her.

She said while the couple were stopped at a gas station in Weatherford, she was able to escape and contact authorities. That’s when the suspect would flee the scene and ultimately lead police on the high speed pursuit.

Fernandez was charged with domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, attempting to elude police, and driving without a valid drivers license.

Bond for Fernandez was set at $750,000.
