An Elk City police officer is recovering today after being stabbed multiple times while making an arrest.

According to a statement from Police Chief Eddie Holland, the incident occurred early Wednesday morning when while attempting to serve an arrest warrant, the subject, identified through booking records as being 50-year-old Frank Bates Whitehead, became non-compliant, and the officer suffered multiple stab wounds to the arm. Whitehead was subdued and taken into custody by the officer until other officers arrived on scene. Later, the Criminal Investigations Division was called out to investigate the scene.

Chief Holland said the injured officer was later treated at Great Plains Regional Medical Center where he required stitches, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Whitehead was booked into the Elk City Jail on a complaint of assault with intent to kill and the investigation is currently still ongoing. Once the investigation is completed, it will be forwarded to the Beckham County District Attorney’s Office.
