A Sayre man was arrested and received felony charges recently after allegedly driving impaired through a construction zone in downtown Elk City.

While doing so, authorities say the man would hit several cones in the process.

According to court records, 50-year-old Benjamin Wayne Aikey was arrested on the afternoon of March 25 after Elk City Police received a report of a reckless driver speeding through the construction zone on Main Street in Elk City.

The same area where crews are working on replacing a water line along the west side of Main Street.

A probable cause affidavit shows that police were able to locate the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Regional Drive and 7th Street, where they were able to successfully make a traffic stop where they attempted to conduct a field sobriety test after allegedly detecting a small odor of alcohol.

However Aikey allegedly was combative with police during the process by not complying with various commands, calling officers offensive names, and resisting arrest. At one point the affidavit stated that police had to deploy pepper spray on Aikey before they were able to place handcuffs on the man.

The affidavit stated that witnesses would tell police that Aikey could have been traveling anywhere between 45 – 50 mph on Main Street.

Aikey was booked into the Elk City Jail. He was later charged with, among other things, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, and assault and battery on a police officer.
