An Oklahoma woman with western Oklahoma ties was given one of the nation’s highest awards at the White House.
Henrietta Mann, who was born in Clinton, was awarded the National Humanities Medal. Mann was one out of 11 people given this honor.
Mann is a full-blood Cheyenne enrolled with the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma and is the endowed chair of Native American Studies at Montana State University.
Previously Mann had served as the president of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College located at Southwestern Oklahoma State University until it’s closure in 2015.
For 28 years, she’s led programs and institutions across the country, devoting her time to teaching the study of Native American history and culture while honoring past ancestors.
Other Medal of Honor Arts and National Humanities recipients included, among others, fashion designer Vera Wang, and Bruce Springsteen.
