Answering the call again to help locals experience Ackley Park’s Christmas decorations, only solid lights glowed there Tuesday night.

A few years ago, the City received a call from a family with an epileptic loved one. Because strobe lights and flashing lights can trigger seizures, the family asked if those park Christmas lights could be turned off for just one night.

The City was happy to oblige.

And one night each holiday season since—including last Tuesday—all strobe and flashing lights in Ackley Park are turned off, leaving only the solid Christmas lights glowing, illuminating the nighttime sky.

We’re happy to do this small thing to help as many as possible enjoy the park’s decorations,” said City Manager Tom Ivester.

Christmas in the Park activities—including the Double Decker Bus, Holly Jolly Trolley, Choctaw Express Mini Train and the Centennial Carousel—are available free of charge each Friday and Saturday evening from the weekend after Thanksgiving until Christmas.

The carousel and train were also available for Tuesday’s special park night.

This year’s Christmas in the Park activities continue through Saturday, Dec. 17.

The park’s lights will shine every night through New Year’s Eve.
