The Oklahoma Department of Commerce announced last week that communities across Oklahoma have been identified to receive grants to accelerate local economic development efforts.

Of the 28 communities awarded, one is located in western Oklahoma.

Weatherford, among 27 others, was named to receive funding forwarded to the state through the U.S. Economic Development Administration.

Grants of up to $24,000 were made available to, among other things, help especially smaller towns to define local site capabilities to support industry, to identify and address limitations, and to initiative potential improvements.

Other communities named to receive funds included: Ada, Alva, Atoka, Bartlesville, Blackwell, Bristow, Broken Arrow, Claremore, Coweta, Duncan, Durant, Enid, Fort Gibson, Guymon, Lawton, McAlester, Norman, Okemah, Perry, Stillwater, Tulsa, and Vinita.

Additionally, Antlers, Stigler, Idabel, Hugo and Broken Bow were identified as part of a consortium, with projects to be represented by the Choctaw Nation.

EDA funding also will be utilized by Commerce to increase awareness of state communities at domestic and international trade shows and in business recruitment meetings. Additionally, a “site location app” will be useful to communities in promoting their own sites, and online training will be provided by Commerce to enhance local economic development efforts.
