An Erick man and an Elk City woman were arrested recently due to their alleged involvement in stealing a truck, and obtaining checks.
According to a probable cause affidavit, 35-year-old Whitney Chantal Bagby was arrested on November 1 after being found with stolen checks that were reported missing, when a truck was taken from a residence in Dill City in late September.
The affidavit said that a break in the case came when while in custody for another crime, authorities learned that the truck that 37-year-old Bo Taylor Bratcher had been driving matched the description of the stolen vehicle out of Dill City.
Bratcher was under investigation from another jurisdiction for utilizing a check at a store. A check that allegedly belonged to the owner of the truck.
During an interview with Bratcher, he would allegedly admit to being in possession of the vehicle, and also admit to writing five hot checks to area businesses. When asked about a sixth check that was used, he did not have any knowledge about it.
Based on who the check was written out too, Elk City Police were able to determine that the check was written by Bagby to a bank in her boyfriend’s name.
When asked about the check, the boyfriend had no knowledge of it. It was determined that the check was used to allegedly open a bank account in the boyfriend’s name without his consent.
Bagby was placed under arrest and later charged with knowingly concealing stolen property and identity theft.
