A California woman was arrested and charged recently after leading authorities on a high speed pursuit on Interstate 40 near Elk City.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 37-year-old Jemila Mignon Hillman of Los Angeles was arrested on August 26 when the vehicle she was a passenger in was pulled over for speeding in a construction zone on I-40 near Elk City.

During the traffic stop the driver, 33-year-old Alexzandra Pantene McCorkle of Charlotte, North Carolina, was asked to exit the vehicle and sit in the patrol car. After a short discussion with the officer, the officer would talk to Hillman about their travels. When the two suspect’s stories did not match up, the officer would return to his unit and ask the driver if there was anything illegal inside the vehicle. At that time the officer noticed the brake lights of the suspect vehicle illuminate, which indicated the passenger had crawled into the drivers seat and put the vehicle in drive.

The car would take off and lead the officer on a short high speed pursuit on I-40 that would reach speeds of up to 100 mph. Eventually the car would pull over without incident. During the arresting process, Hillman would tell the officer that there was illegal marijuana in the vehicle. A later search of the car would find a plastic sack that contained one pound of marijuana.

Both Hillman and McCorkle were arrested and transported to the Elk City Jail.

Both were charged in Beckham County District Court with one count each of unlawful possession of a controlled drug with the intent to distribute. Hillman was also charged with one count of attempting to elude a police officer.
