Lack of rain in the area has prompted one area county to implement a burn ban.

According to County Commissioner Dillon Berry, Dewey County is now under a burn ban effective immediately. The United States Drought Monitor says the majority of the county is described as being in a severe drought, with the eastern edge described as being in extreme drought conditions.

Other counties including all of Roger Mills and Beckham are considered to be in moderate drought conditions. Officials with both counties told Paragon Communications that there have been no discussions to implement a burn ban.

Custer County, according to the monitor is described as being in a moderate drought, with the northern portions being described as being in the early stages of being in a severe drought.

Custer County Commissioner Wade Anders says there has been no discussion of going into a burn ban yet. He says the commissioners take the recommendation of a burn ban from local fire chiefs.
