An Ohio man traveling from Las Vegas to Cleveland was arrested near Elk City recently when drugs were found to be in his possession during a traffic stop on Interstate 40.

According to a probable cause affidavit 51-year-old Joel Scott Hoye of Sheffield, Ohio along with a passenger, were pulled over on I-40 last week when Hoye was allegedly speeding through a construction zone near Elk City. During the routine stop that was ultimately going to be a written warning, the officer noticed the defendant to appear nervous and was sweating. During a separate interview with the passenger, their stories of why they were driving from Las Vegas to Cleveland did not match up. The officer conducted a search of the vehicle and located marijuana edibles, a glass pipe with what was later field tested positive to be methamphetamine residue in it, and a clear plastic bag that allegedly contained methamphetamine. The document stated that Hoye was arrested, while the passenger was released with the vehicle from the scene.

Hoye was later charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of a controlled drug.

His first court appearance is scheduled to take place Thursday morning.
