Wrong Way Driver Causes Accident On I-40

A Blanchard man is dead after driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 in Custer county.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the mishap took place Saturday night west of Weatherford when, for an unknown reason, Robert Hicks was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-40 and struck a vehicle driven by 75-year-old Terrill Sarter of Sayre. The impact sent the Hicks vehicle into the medium striking the cable barriers before coming to a stop. The Sarter vehicle was struck by a semi before coming to rest on the right side of the road. The two occupants of the semi were uninjured. Sarter was air lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was admitted with head, trunk internal and external injuries. He was last listed in critical condition. Unfortunately Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown why Hicks was going the wrong way. According to the OHP, the condition of the driver and the official cause of the collision is under investigation.
