May 3rd will always be a day that stands out for Oklahomans. It was 20 years ago when a powerful tornado ripped through central Oklahoma, causing over $1 billion in damage, and killing 36. Current Elk City resident Katie Conner was 8-years-old on that day, and was living in Moore when the storm hit.

As a result of losing all of her possessions, Conner and her family moved to Elk City to live with her grandmother. Conner says it was then the Elk City community stepped up to help.

Conner moved to Elk City permanently in 2004 after living in Texas and has lived in the city ever since.
