SWOSU’s Brewer Joins Weatherford Museum Board

The Heartland of America Museum in Weatherford has added Southwestern Oklahoma State University History Assistant Professor Landry Brewer to its board of directors.

Brewer, the 2018 recipient of SWOSU’s prestigious Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award for outstanding achievement in teaching, scholarship and service, teaches at the SWOSU Sayre location and has been published in multiple academic journals, has addressed academic and civic groups in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, and has written two books, Cold War Oklahoma and Cold War Kansas. His next book is scheduled to be published in August.

I was humbled by the invitation to join the museum board and am honored to be a part of a wonderful institution dedicated to preserving the history of West-Central Oklahoma, the heart of the Heartland,” Brewer said.

Brewer’s research has focused on the impact of the Cold War on the Plains states, especially Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, and the roles those states played in national security policy during that 45-year conflict pitting the United States and the Democratic West against the Soviet Union and the Communist East.

He presented a poster about his project to place a historic marker at the Willow Atlas F Intercontinental Ballistic Missile launch site in northern Greer County—one of 12 Atlas ICBM launch sites attached to Altus Air Force Base in the early 1960s—at the 2017 meeting of the National Association of State and Local History on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Brewer also co-hosts “The Early Morning Show” on KECO Radio in Elk City with his twin brother Nathan.

Brewer joins a board that includes SWOSU President Dr. Diana Lovell, Zella Gifford Brown, Ray Reed, Linda White, Nedra Smith, Dr. John Ludrick and Dr. Paulette Woods.

Located at 1600 S. Frontage Road, between Exits 82 and 84 on Interstate 40, Weatherford’s Heartland of America Museum preserves the history of life here in the nation’s Heartland.

Artifacts from the late 1800s through the 1960s are showcased in 32 major historical exhibits and nearly 40 smaller exhibits inside the museum’s 12,000 square-foot main building. In addition, three historic-themed buildings and a restored Huey Helicopter flown during the Vietnam War are also available to view outside the main building on the museum grounds.
