Governor Kevin Stitt held his fourth ‘State of the State’ address to begin the 2nd Session of the 58th Legislature on Monday.

During the speech, Stitt addressed the coronavirus pandemic, schools, the state’s job climate and the budget.

But one topic that is likely to get a lot of attention this legislative session will be the state’s medical marijuana industry. During his address Stitt talked about proposed changes to the industry saying because of the loose restrictions, the state charges just $2,500 for a commercial license. He said as a result, Oklahoma has 7 times the growers than California with just 10% of the people.

He stated that in neighboring Arkansas, there are only 8 growers compared to Oklahoma’s 8,300.

H.D. 57 Rep. Anthony Moore (R-Clinton) said a number of bills addressing the medical marijuana industry were passed through the house last year but were held up in the state senate. He said he feels this year similar bills have a better chance to get to the Governor’s desk.

Moore also agreed with the Governor’s comments regarding education, saying the focus on career development needs to be emphasized in the future.
