Fires / Wind Damage Reported in Western Oklahoma Friday

Unseasonable warm temperatures and extreme wind wreaked havoc on western Oklahoma Friday afternoon.

First, a wildfire that originated roughly two miles south east of Reydon in Roger Mills County burnt well over a 1,000 acres and traveled northeast for just under five miles. Reydon Fire Chief Jason Hartley says although five homes were saved, one was lost in the fire. All eight fire departments in Roger Mills County responded to the blaze, as well other area fire departments including Elk City, Erick, Leedey, Sayre, and Vici.

The U.S. Forest Service and Oklahoma Forestry Service rendered air as well.

Chief Hartley says although no official cause of the wildfire has been determined, he suspects power lines whipped around by the high winds may have sparked the blaze that saw crews battle the fire for nearly 12 hours.

High winds were also to blame for metal skirting blowing off of an awning over gas pumps at the Elk City United grocery store. As a result, the skirting fell on a pickup. The driver was not injured.

Finally, Elk City firefighters responded to a house fire in the 200 block of Parkview on Friday that saw the home’s wooden front porch ignited, but the home was spared thanks to the quick response by fire crews.

Elk City Police Chief Eddie Holland said one occupant in the home, an elderly woman in a wheelchair, was not injured.

Fire officials say the cause of that fire is still under investigation, but suspects a discarded cigarette could be the culprit.
