An Elk City man received a felony charge recently after allegedly speeding on city streets in Elk City while attempting to elude police.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident took place on the morning of June 3, when while observing traffic in the 1100 block of South Main, an Elk City police officer clocked a car traveling 77 mph. The speed limit in that area is posted at 40 mph.

The officer stated that he initiated a traffic stop by turning on both his sirens and lights, however the car sped through a convenience store parking lot on the corner of South Main and 20th Streets, and proceeded to head west on 20th Street before turning north on Washington.

The vehicle eventually pulled over in the 1300 block of South Washington where the driver, identified as 21-year-old Jayden Luke Lasater, was arrested. When asked why he didn’t stop, Lasater would tell police that he was late for work and didn’t want to “be hassled”.

Lasater was booked into the Elk City Jail and later charged with a felony count of endangering others while eluding or attempting to elude a police officer.
