Western OK – Firefighters in Beckham and Roger Mills counties responded to separate fires Thursday, including a house fire near Elk City and a grass fire south of Cheyenne.
Elk City firefighters spent several hours Thursday morning battling a house fire near the Beckham-Roger Mills county line. According to Elk City Fire & EMS, the home sustained heavy fire damage and was considered a total loss.
The fire came despite welcome rainfall in the area. Fire officials cautioned that conditions remain dry enough for wildfires and said controlled burns are still discouraged heading into another hot and dry weekend.
Later Thursday, firefighters in Roger Mills County responded to a grass fire south of Cheyenne.
Roger Mills County Emergency Management reported the fire at approximately 6:44 p.m. near N1910 and E990 roads. Cheyenne and Strong City fire departments responded along with mutual aid from Hammon, Berlin and Graders from Roger Mills County District 1.
Crews made a quick attack and stopped the fire’s forward progress after approximately 15 acres burned. Officials said the fire appeared to have started from a tree that was smoldering following a lightning strike from storms overnight.
All units were released from the scene by approximately 8:30 p.m.
The fires came during a period of unusually dry conditions across western Oklahoma. Roger Mills County entered September following its ninth-driest August on record and second-driest January through August period in 132 years of records.
