A Sayre man was arrested and charged last month after attempting to flee police.

Court documents show the man attempted to steal two cars, including a police unit, while attempting to elude authorities on foot.

According to a probable cause affidavit, filed in Beckham County District Court last week, Sayre Police arrested 31-year-old Frank Lee Schmidt after he was discovered to be in possession of a firearm.

The affidavit stated that Schmidt was not to be in possession of the gun due to him being a convicted felon.

The incident took place on the morning of September 21, when police were dispatched to a Sayre apartment complex on a welfare check. When they arrived to the apartment occupied by Schmidt, they would notice a handgun in the living room. While the responding officer was waiting for backup to arrive, Schmidt would go to a back room and exit the apartment.

From there police would pursue the suspect that saw the individual enter a nearby home while a woman was inside, attempt to enter two parked vehicles, one of which being the police cruiser.

Police would eventually catch up with Schmidt and deploy their taser on the suspect before arresting him.

The suspect was charged with possessing a firearm while in commission of a felony, burglary in the first degree, larceny, and escape from arrest or detention.

Bond was set at $30,000.
