Sales tax numbers are in for area cities for the month of March, and they appear to be on the uptick.

Elk City is once again over $1 million at just under $1.2 million – a 17% increase when compared to a year ago. Why the dramatic increase? City Treasurer Jennifer Rainey says she suspects it is because of a lot of out of town visitors due to recent activity at the softball / baseball 5-plex at Ackley Park West.

Rainey also credits the influx of tax dollars to recent stimulus checks that have been distributed over the last 12 months.

Elk City is looking good when compared to other cities in the area. Weatherford saw a 19% increase with just over $1,035,000. Clinton had a 16% boost bringing in just over $475,000.

Sayre brought in just under $154,000 in tax revenue – a 14.5% increase.

Small towns in the area fared well too.

Cheyenne saw a 2.8% increase, Mangum was up 4.9%, Cordell was up 12%, Burns Flat was up 24% and Canute saw a hefty boost at 41% when compared to last year.
